Scott Marshall-Smith

Teaches: Contemporary

Scott started dancing when he was 15 years old. He was having singing lessons when he was told that if he could dance, he had a better chance of getting into school musicals. He started classes then, and fell in love with it.

He then spent 3 years training at the Liverpool Institute Of performing Arts (LIPA). The three years focused on dance training as well as other performing arts such as singing and acting. After graduating, Scott was offered a cruise ship contract dancing on board the ship. At the same time, he had numerous WestEnd musical auditions. But when injury struck and he had to have his knee operated on, he struggled to perform to the standard required. He then took to teaching dance to help nurture and create the best new up and coming dancers.

Which dance styles did you train in?

At dance school I did ballet, tap, jazz and modern. I then spent 3 years at university studying dance as an art form which meant focusing on the body and performance skills.

Are you also an active sports person? What sports do you enjoy?

I am a massive rugby fan and have always been a fan. I played rugby until the age 18 when I had to choose between trials for a national team or going to study dance. Guess which one I chose? (Dance, of course!)

Have you ever been injured? If so, how has it affected you?

I had a major operation on my left knee just before University and spent the summer before term strengthening my leg ready. Then unfortunately I had my right knee operated on not long after graduation. I have always had to take extra care with my knees but dancing is in my blood and I will always find a way to dance.

What did your first dance costume look like?

At age 15 I still remember my dance school’s uniform. They had not had many older male dancers so I had to wear the same as the girl’s uniform. It was a bright yellow t-shirt with royal blue crushed velvet flared trousers.

If you could go back in time, what would advice would you give your younger self?

No matter what life throws at you, if you have dance in your heart, your soul will find a way to bring dance back into your life.
