Q&A with Ainslie

What got you into teaching?

When I was in high school, I was at the studio every afternoon and looked up to my teachers and the older students who taught classes. I asked to assistant teach and then was lucky enough to be given my own class!

What styles of dance do you teach?

I am currently teaching Jazz but have also taught Contemporary and Ballet in the past.

What is your favourite group to teach?

This is a hard one as I’ve taught toddlers all the way up to adults! I love the age group I am currently teaching (10-12 years) as they are so energetic and eager to learn! I do miss teaching my Blueberries classes though — they are just so cute!

What is your style of teaching?

I want all my students to have fun but at the same time learn as much as they can!

What inspires you when it comes to choreographing?

I always imagine a scene or storyline in my head and think about how I could bring that to life! I love to add a fun costume and a bit of acting into my routines to make the dance a lot of fun!

What do you love most about dance?

There is no better feeling than working hard all year then getting to dress up and give it your all on stage! The performance aspect of dance is what I love the most.

What do you love most about teaching?

It is rewarding to see my students grow in their dance technique but also their confidence. I love to watch my students develop the same passion for dance that I have.

What are your top tips for students to get the most out of class?

Listen and pay attention to detail. You are only there for 45min – 1hour so make the most of it! Ask plenty of questions! I love them and am always happy to break down movements.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I love a good cheese board/ grazing platter!

Who has been the biggest influence on your life?

My parents – hardworking and kind.

Where would you go on your dream holiday?

Ahh – I like too many places! Either a trip to New York City or South of France/Italy.
