Dance Experience

I’ve danced since I was 4 yrs old, so 17 yrs, and I have done pretty much every style you can try. I grew up dancing at the only dance school in my small country town before I left for boarding school and continued dancing until I came to university. I’ve mainly trained in Ballet, Jazz, Tap and Contemporary. I trained in RAD ballet up until Grade 5 before changing to ADA where I completed up all my stars and pre-elementary exams plus three levels of pointe. I have also taken all my Jazz exams up until bar-to-gold and pre-elementary. When I started at ANU I found out they didn’t have a dance Team and I was very lost without dancing so I started my own competitive team in 2019 and trained them in Jazz, Contemporary and Pom.

Teaching Experience

I started assisting my teachers at the age of 15 with the young tappers and jazz dancers. I  helped out all through high school but stopped when I came to Canberra. Then I started teaching again last year when I started working at DC and taught Blueberries.

Q&A with Erica

What got you into teaching?

I got into teaching because I love dancing and I wanted to share my knowledge and get others into dancing. Dance has always been a part of my life and I love that feeling when you work so hard on something and give it all you got, and you put something amazing on stage or you get that move or trick that’s been too difficult. That feeling of achievement is amazing and I love doing that with all my friends.

What is your favourite group to teach?

Teaching Blueberries was amazing because you got to see these toddlers grow up and really get into dancing. You can be having the worst morning but coming into the kids always put a smile on my face.

What are your top tips for students to get the most out of class?

Getting good at dancing takes practice and hard work. Your probably not going to get it right straight away but just keep trying and for that 45 min – 1 hr give it all you got and I promise you’ll leave better then you started

What’s your favourite quote?

You can never be overdressed or overeducated — Oscar Wilde

Where would you go on your dream holiday?

Anywhere in South America. My best friend and I wanted to go just to do the different Latin style dances in each country!
