ROLE: Hip Hop Teacher

Dance Experience

I was talent scouted for dancing and acting and performed at the Arts Showcase Los Angeles in 2017. I  performed with Kulturebreak at the Ronald McDonald Charity House Ball in 2019 and the Australia Day Awards in 2020. I  have been on two dance Hope Tours with Kulturebreak, one in regional parts of Victoria alongside Timomatic, and one in Canberra alongside the Nubian Gents and Feminine Fire (a stepping and dance team from New York).

I have been teaching breakdance with Dance Central since 2017.

Q&A with Ethan

What got you into teaching?

I have a passion for keeping the breakdance culture alive and I love seeing people grow as dancers. So when I was offered the opportunity  to teach my own class I was excited.

What styles of dance do you teach?

I teach breakdance. I’m keen to teach hip hop in the future.

What is your favourite group to teach?

I love all my students of all ages. I do not have a preference on which age group I teach.

What is your style of teaching?

I like to be upbeat and motivate my students.

What inspires you when it comes to choreographing?

I like to think of the objective of the dance, keep the level of the class in mind, and let the music take over.

What do you love most about dance?

I love how dance can be a way of expressing any emotion, bring people together, and can be used to spread positive messages through performance art.

What do you love most about teaching?

I love seeing my students improve in dance and I enjoy building relationships with my students and watching them grow.

What are your top tips for students to get the most out of class?

Be present in the class. Listen to the teacher’s instructions, remember to have fun, and don’t be afraid to try your hardest.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure would be eating ice cream out of the tub.

Who has been the biggest influence on your life?

I have had many big influences in my life but my grandma would be my biggest and it is because of her that I am a dancer.

Tell us about your personal fashion style.

I like to wear things that I see other hip hop dancers and artists wear.

What’s your favourite quote?

“Work hard in silence,  let your success be your noise.”

Where would you go on your dream holiday?

For my dream holiday, I would go to Malaysia to see family on my mum’s side.
