Katie Byrnes

ROLE: Blueberries Teacher

Dance Experience

I’ve been dancing since I was 3 — ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary. When I moved from Melbourne to Canberra for Uni, I also began taking hip hop classes. Bit of a shock for my classically trained brain!

Teaching Experience

I began teaching ballet, tap and jazz in Melbourne in 2015, and started teaching Blueberries at DC in 2020!

Q&A with Katie

What got you into teaching?

I’ve always loved helping out with the younger kids at showcases and comps, and so when I was old enough, my own dance teacher (whom I looked up to and aspired to be like) asked me to assist with some of her classes. From there, I got more confident and experienced and was able to take on my own classes!

What styles of dance do you teach?

At DC, I teach Blueberries!

What is your favourite group to teach?

I love teaching the younger kids — they have so much energy and bring so much joy to classes.

What is your style of teaching?

I try to keep classes fun and exciting, by staying positive and putting a lot of energy into what I teach!

What inspires you when it comes to choreographing?

When I choreograph, I like to base it off my own emotions and experiences. I feel like dances have more authenticity when they come from the heart.

What do you love most about dance?

Dance is one of the best things you can do to get out of your own head — it’s a place where you can just let go and enjoy yourself.

What do you love most about teaching?

I really love seeing the kids come in every week excited to dance- it reminds me of how much I enjoy dancing myself! It makes me so happy to see a new generation taking their first steps into the dance world.

What are your top tips for students to get the most out of class?

Come into class with an open mind and be ready to have fun!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I love going out for brunch with my friends!

Tell us about your personal fashion style.

My personal style is a very strange mix of ’80s mum and Melbourne coffee snob — my friends describe it as “Melbourne comfy cute”.

Where would you go on your dream holiday?

Definitely South America — I’ve always wanted to visit Machu Picchu and explore the Andes!
